Move your email from Fastmail to FranklyMail

Fastmail always needs an app password — your normal one will not work over IMAP, even without two-factor. Make one under Privacy & Security, give it mail access, and the import copies every folder across.

Which password Fastmail wants

An app password, always. Fastmail is unusual here: most providers only demand one when two-factor is switched on, and Fastmail requires one regardless. Its own documentation is blunt about it — you cannot use your regular Fastmail password for IMAP, POP or SMTP. If the import is refused, this is almost certainly why.

Getting it, step by step.

Written against Fastmail's current screens — the words in quotes are the words on the buttons.

If you would rather skip the menus: https://app.fastmail.com/settings/security opens the right screen directly, in whatever language your account is set to.

  1. 1

Open Settings, then Privacy & Security.

  2. 2

Find the section called "Connected apps & API tokens" and click "Manage app passwords and access".

  3. 3

Click "New app password". Fastmail may ask for your account password again — that is expected.

  4. 4

Choose a name from the list, or pick "Custom…" and type one. The name is only a label for you; it does not affect what the password can do.

  5. 5

Set the access level to "Mail, Contacts & Calendars", or "Mail (IMAP/POP/SMTP)" if your account offers it.

This is the step that decides whether the password works. An app password scoped to Files (WebDAV) is a valid password that will still be refused by the mail server.

  6. 6

Click "Generate password" and copy what appears, then "Done".

Sixteen characters. Paste it into the import form as the password.

What to put in the import form.

In the FranklyMail panel, open Mailboxes and find "Bring your old mail across".

Username
Your full address at Fastmail, not just the part before the @.
Password
An app password, from the steps above.

For the technically curious: on 24 August 2026 this server answered AUTH=PLAIN, AUTH=LOGIN, AUTH=XOAUTH2, AUTH=OAUTHBEARER to a CAPABILITY command on port 993. That is what it accepts on the wire; which password it accepts from you is the separate question the section above answers.

What goes wrong with Fastmail.

  • Scope is the usual mistake, not the password itself. Fastmail’s own troubleshooting page tells people to go back and confirm the app password has mail access — a password with the wrong scope fails exactly like a wrong password.
  • Fastmail documents that mail clients slow down noticeably once a single folder holds more than 50,000 messages. A very large Inbox will take hours, and there is nothing wrong when it does.
  • Delete the app password from that same screen when the import has finished. It is one click, and it is the whole benefit of having used one.

Then the part that is the same for everyone.

Getting the password is the only step that differs by provider. The order of the move, what does and does not come across, and the one decision that stops you ending up with two copies of every message are on the main migration page.
