Move your email from GMX or Web.de to FranklyMail
IMAP is switched off by default on both, and it switches itself back off if you stop using it. Turn it on, check which of the three server names is yours, and your normal password will do the rest.
Which password GMX and Web.de wants
Your normal mailbox password, once IMAP is switched on. An application-specific password is needed only if you have turned on two-factor authentication, or if you are connecting from outside Europe, the USA and Canada — GMX blocks plain passwords by geography.
Getting it, step by step.

Sign in on a computer at gmx.net or web.de and click the icon with your initials in the top bar, then "E-Mail-Einstellungen".

Under "E-Mail empfangen" choose "POP3/IMAP", then set the slider to "POP3- und IMAP-Zugriff erlauben".
You will be asked to solve a small puzzle — dragging two symbols together — before it saves. Some accounts still show an older screen with a tick box and a Save button instead.

Pick the right server: imap.gmx.net for a German GMX address, imap.gmx.com for an international one, imap.web.de for Web.de. Port 993.
The .de, .at and .ch addresses all point at imap.gmx.net, and .co.uk and .fr point at imap.gmx.com — measured, so either spelling reaches the right place.

Use your full address as the username and your normal mailbox password.
What to put in the import form.
In the FranklyMail panel, open Mailboxes and find "Bring your old mail across".

For the technically curious: on 24 August 2026 this server answered AUTH=LOGIN, AUTH=PLAIN to a CAPABILITY command on port 993. That is what it accepts on the wire; which password it accepts from you is the separate question the section above answers.
What goes wrong with GMX and Web.de.
- IMAP turns itself off again. GMX and Web.de both disable it automatically if no mail program has used it for a while, as a security measure. If a migration that worked last month refuses today, check this first.
- A locked account looks exactly like a wrong password over IMAP. GMX locks accounts for things like simultaneous logins from different places, and the real reason is only visible in webmail — so if the password is definitely right, sign in at gmx.net in a browser and read what it says there.
- Free accounts have IMAP like everyone else. GMX’s own data-export page tells users to use it, so a paid plan is not required for this.
- GMX and Web.de name their folders in German — Posteingang, Gesendete, Papierkorb, Spam. They come across under those names, which is right, but do not expect an "Inbox".
Then the part that is the same for everyone.
